Allegra - Relief for Seasonal and Common Household Allergies

What Is Allegra & How Does It Work?

Allegra (fexofenadine) is a powerful antihistamine that helps relieve most allergies, including seasonal allergies, common household allergies and hay fever. Allegra can also be effective for allergic reactions such as hives. Allegra will not make you drowsy. Many allergies, such as hay fever (often referred to as allergic rhinitis), occur when you inhale air particles that you are allergic to. This causes your body's immune system to naturally release antihistamines. Allegra is able to relieve allergic reactions because it counteracts the antihistamines that are released by your body.

Allergies are very common due to the fact they exist both in our homes and in the outdoors. Many people have adverse reactions to dust, pet dander and mites in the home, for example. And some of the most common outdoor allergies include pollen, various weeds and trees.

Allegra Precautions

Patients with kidney conditions should tell their doctor before taking Allegra, as a smaller dosage may be prescribed. Do not take antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium (such as Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta, Milk of Magnesia, or Pepcid Complete) within a couple of hours of taking Allegra, as this will decrease the drug's effectiveness. Also, do not take Allegra with fruit juice, as this may make Allegra less effective. Take the medication with water, and do not consume fruit juices within two hours of taking Allegra. If you miss a dose of Allegra, take it at your first opportunity. If you are near the time of your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and keep taking Allegra as scheduled. Women who are pregnant or nursing should tell their doctor before using Allegra. Those who have asthma should consult with their doctor. Always tell your doctor about all medications you take before beginning any new medication.

How to Take Allegra

Take Allegra exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Most patients, however, are told to take one 60mg dose of Allegra twice daily. Another option is to take 180 mg once daily, but your doctor will tell you which dose is recommended for you. Ask your doctor if you have questions.

Allegra Side Effects

Side effects are usually mild to moderate with Allegra, and those that were experienced by more than two percent of patients during clinical trials were: headache, back pain, dizziness, stomach discomfort, and pain in extremity. In rare cases, a serious allergic reaction can occur. If you experience any of the following symptoms, stop taking Allegra and get immediate medical help: swelling of throat, lips mouth or tongue; or hives.
