Cold sores caused by the herpes labialis virus can be painful and embarrassing. Fortunately, Denavir can help lessen the severity of pain associated cold sores, as well as the duration of breakouts themselves. Denavir (penciclovir is the drug name) is an antiviral topical cream that has been proven to effectively treat herpes-caused cold sores around the mouth. Denavir attacks the herpes virus and prevents it from further replicating, which speeds up the healing process. If used as directed, Denavir can help patients decrease by one-half day both the length of time that cold sores cause pain, and the length of time that they are present.
Always speak with your doctor before beginning any new prescription medication. Denavir should be used only externally, and not on the mucous membranes. Avoid allowing Denavir to get in or near the eyes as this may cause moderate to severe irritation. Refrain from using any other topical drugs, creams or lotions during treatment, unless directed by your doctor. If you encounter a rash or have other allergic skin reactions, discontinue use of Denavir and consult with your doctor.
Use Denavir exactly as directed by your physician. Avoid the eyes, nose, ears and inside of the mouth when applying the medication. Denavir is typically applied every two hours during waking hours over the span of a four-day treatment week. If you miss an application, apply the cream when you remember and then resume normal application every two hours during the day. Denavir should be applied as quickly as possible after cold sores appear.
As with all prescription skin care products, side effects may occur when using Denavir. Side effects are typically are minor and are experienced in less than 2 percent of patients. Side effects may include: numbness, tingling, minor rash, or minor irritation at the application site, or subtle changes in taste. If you experience any side effects, inform your physician, and if side effects are serious, discontinue use of Denavir.
