What Is Famvir & How Does It Work?

Famvir (famciclovir) is a powerful antiviral medication used to treat the herpes simplex virus (genital herpes and cold sores) and herpes zoster (shingles). When taken as directed, Famvir has been proven to both help prevent herpes outbreaks, as well as lessen the duration of the symptoms. Famvir is effective because it attacks the herpes simplex virus, allowing the body to fight off the virus. This is accomplished because the ingredients in Famvir inhibit herpes viral DNA synthesis, and therefore its replication. If taken quickly after an outbreak occurs, Famvir will generally lessen the duration and severity of the symptoms caused by the herpes simplex virus and herpes zoster.

Famvir Precautions

Tell your doctor about all medications that you are currently taking, including over-the-counter supplements, etc., as well as any known drug allergies. Patients with underlying renal (kidney) disease should speak with their doctor and exercise extreme caution with Famvir. Patients with creatinine clearance values should receive dosage adjustments from their doctor. Women who are pregnant or nursing should tell their doctor before taking this drug. Taking Famvir does not cure herpes or prevent you from spreading the herpes virus to others.

How to Take Famvir

Dosage amounts and frequency of doses differ for herpes simplex (genital herpes and cold sores) and herpes zoster (shingles). Take Famvir by mouth specifically as directed by your doctor. If you miss a dose of Famvir, simply take a dose as soon as you can, and then take additional doses (if prescribed) at the intervals recommended by your doctor.

Famvir Side Effects

Like all STD medications, Famvir sometimes causes side effects. During clinical tests, some side effects occurred more prominently in those who received Famvir versus placebo. These included headache, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, flatulence, tingling and itching. In rare cases, a potentially serious allergic reaction can occur that can include: breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips, swelling of the mouth, swelling of the tongue, swelling of the face or an outbreak of hives. If you experience any of these rare, yet serious, side effects, seek immediate medical attention and stop taking Famvir.
