What Is Levitra & How Does It Work?

Levitra inhibits the enzyme known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5), and therefore it works in the same manner as the other FDA-approved medications for ED. What Precautions Should Be Taken With Levitra?

  • Never take Levitra with medications or drugs that contain nitrates, which are prescribed predominantly for chest pain/angina. Combining these medications could cause your blood pressure to drop quickly to levels that are unsafe, and this means conditions such as dizziness, fainting or even stroke could occur.
  • Your local doctor should be made aware before you begin any new medications. Be sure to share your current medications, such as alpha blockers. Also update your doctor regarding your medical conditions and allergies. For instance, any occurrence of high-blood pressure, liver and kidney problems or heart issues should be brought to light.
  • Lower doses of Levitra, or more time in between doses, could be recommended for patients who take certain medications. Some of these include: ritonavir, indinavir, saquinavir, atazanavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, erythromycin and others. Levitra and any other ED pill should not be taken more than once every 24 hours.
  • Sexual activity can take a toll on the body, and your doctor can tell you if you are up to the task.
  • Levitra and other ED medications provide no protection from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
  • Do not drink alcohol in excess (5 or more drinks) with Levitra, as this can increase the severity of side effects and/or lower blood pressure.

    • How to Take Levitra & Doses

    Most patients are told by their doctor to begin taking the 10mg dose of Levitra. Although, your doctor may elect to prescribe the 20mg tablets so that you can cut them with a pill splitter in order to save money. Based on the results of your sexual experiences with Levitra, as well as your health and medical history, your doctor may choose a dosage more appropriate for you.

    Always take Levitra as prescribed by your doctor, and do not share your tablets. Levitra typically becomes fully effective within one hour of consumption. However, positive effects could begin to be felt in as few as 20 minutes. Levitra is most effective when taken on an empty stomach. It may be taken with or after a meal – however, it may take a little longer to be effective.

    Levitra Side Effects

    The most common side effects for Levitra are typically minor or moderate and include headache, flushing (skin on the face turning red) and stuffy or runny nose. In most cases, these side effects last only a few hours, or less.

    In the event of very rare or more serious side effects such as changes in vision (a bluish tint), loss of vision or hearing, or an erection lasting four hours or more (called priapism), seek immediate medical attention and discontinue treatment with Levitra. If you undergo any side effects that are uncomfortable for you, make your doctor aware of them.
