What Is Nasacort AQ & How Does It Work?
Nasacort AQ is a prescription nasal spray that helps relieve the nasal symptoms of seasonal and everyday allergies, as well as hay fever. Nasacort is proven to be effective in reducing nasal itching, runny nose, postnasal drip, nasal congestion and sneezing. Nasacort works by preventing the release of substances in the body (histamines) that cause inflammation, itching and irritation.
Nasacort AQ Precautions
Nasacort AQ should be used with caution if these medical conditions exist: glaucoma, liver disease, tuberculosis, any type of infection, ocular herpes, recent nasal surgery or existing nasal sores, underactive thyroid or allergies to corticosteroids. This medication may affect growth patterns in children. Consult your child's doctor before they use this product. If you are pregnant or nursing, discuss the risks and benefits of Nasacort with your doctor before taking the medication.
How to Take Nasacort AQ
Use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Generally, for individuals 12 years of age or older, the recommended dosage is two sprays in each nostril once daily. Once allergies are under control, one spray in each nostril will generally provide positive results. Be sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist to demonstrate the correct way to use a nasal spray. Shake well before using. Nasacort must be used regularly (every day) to be most effective. Be sure to aim spray away from the middle of the nose, that is, away from the nasal septum. Do not increase your dose or use more frequently than directed, as this may cause, or worsen, side effects. It may take several days before the full benefits of the medication are realized.
Nasacort AQ Side Effects
Like all corticosteroids used to treat allergy symptoms, this medication may cause side effects. These are generally minor and may include stinging, burning, irritation or dryness of the nasal passages. Other side effects may include: headache, lightheadedness, sneezing, nosebleed, throat irritation, loss of taste or nausea. If you experience side effects that linger or become bothersome, tell your doctor. If you experience more serious, but unlikely side effects, quit taking Nasonex and contact your doctor promptly: persistent nose or throat irritation/soreness, white patchy areas, broken or damaged nasal membranes, unusual weakness, weight loss, nausea/vomiting, fainting, dizziness or vision changes.
