Nasonex - Relieve Nasal Allergy Symptoms

What Is Nasonex & How Does It Work?

Nasonex is a prescription nasal spray intended to alleviate the symptoms of indoor and outdoor allergies, including pet dander, dust mites and mold, as well as pollens, grass, weeds and trees. For people who suffer from seasonal allergies, Nasonex should be used every day when symptoms are present. Clinical studies showed that Nasonex begins to treat year-round and perennial allergies within 11 hours. It may take a week or more to experience the maximum benefit of Nasonex. One daily dose of Nasonex (typically two sprays in each nostril, as directed by your physician) is designed to provide 24-hour relief.

Nasonex Precautions

Tell your doctor about any and all medications you take before using Nasonex. If you have taken an oral steroid for a lengthy period of time, and then switch to an intranasal steroid such as Nasonex, this must be done with care. The body can't heal as quickly after surgery, infection or serious injury while it adjusts to the switch. Also, switching from an oral steroid to an intranasal steroid may cause other medical conditions (asthma, eczema, arthritis, etc.) to get worse. As with any long-term topical treatment of the nasal cavity, patients who use Nasonex for several months, or longer, should be examined periodically for possible changes in the nasal mucosa. Nasal and inhaled corticosteroids should not be used in excessive doses because they have been associated with the development of glaucoma and/or cataracts. If you have these conditions, speak with your doctor before using Nasonex. If you experience a change in vision, speak with your physician urgently. Patients should not spray Nasonex into the eyes or directly onto the nasal septum.

How to Take Nasonex

Always take Nasonex exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is very important not to overuse Nasonex because this can cause or worsen various side effects that are not otherwise experienced with prescribed usage. The typical recommended dose for the treatment of nasal symptoms caused by allergies is two sprays (50 mcg in each spray) in each nostril once daily (total daily dose of 200 mcg). Often times, doctors advise their patients to begin using Nasonex 2 to 4 weeks prior to the anticipated start of the pollen season. Check with your doctor for specific dosage and usage.

Nasonex Side Effects

The overall incidence of adverse events for patients treated with Nasonex was comparable to patients treated with vehicle placebo. Patients who took Nasonex were slightly more likely to experience headache, viral infection, sore throat and blood-tinged mucus. Overuse of Nasonex can cause or worsen side effects.
