Nexium - Effectively Treat Heartburn

What Is Nexium & How Does It Work?

Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor that temporarily turns off some of the acid- producing pumps in the stomach, thereby reducing stomach acid. Because Nexium decreases acid production in the stomach, it is used to treat symptoms of frequent heartburn/gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other stomach-acid conditions. Nexium does not work immediately, and may take several days to be effective. Nexium can also help heal erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus) because it stops the erosion and tissue damage caused by acid contact. Nexium may also be used for purposes dealing with gastric ulcers. Consult with your doctor before beginning Nexium or any new medication.

Nexium Precautions

There are many medications that may affect Nexium, so tell your doctor about all medications that you take, especially Reyataz, Digoxin, Diazepam, Ketoconazole, iron medications or blood thinners. Anyone who is allergic to esomeprazole (Nexium's active ingredient) should speak with their physician before taking Nexium. If you have experienced any type of liver disease or heart disease, your doctor may request for you to take tests or adjust your dosage. Take Nexium for the entire length of time prescribed by your physician. Your symptoms may improve before you should cease treatment with Nexium. Women who are breastfeeding or pregnant should consult a physician prior to taking Nexium.

How to Take Nexium

Nexium capsules should be taken exactly as prescribed for you. Typically, Nexium is taken only once a day at least one hour before meal, and always with at least 8 ounces of water. Nexium can provide up to 24 hours of relief. Nexium is typically taken for 4 to 8 weeks, after which your doctor may decide whether a second course of treatment is necessary. Take Nexium for as long as prescribed by your doctor; do not stop treatment prematurely. Do not crush, break or open delayed-release capsules. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Nexium Side Effects

Side effects with Nexium may include headache, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, stomach pain, gas or dry mouth. Other side effects are possible, but unlikely. Obtain immediate medical attention in the rare event you experience an allergic reaction with Nexium (hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat).
