Patanol (olopatadine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution) 0.1% is an effective prescription medication for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis (pink eye). Patanol is also effective in treating symptoms of allergies associated with the eyes: itching, redness, etc. Patanol can work in minutes to provide relief for an extended period of time.
Patanol should not be used as a remedy for irritation caused by contact lenses. Speak with your doctor before taking Patanol or any new medication. Pregnant or nursing women should not take Patanol without consulting with their doctor. Do not touch the eyelids when applying Patanol as this can contaminate the solution. Wait at least 10 minutes after taking Patanol to insert contact lenses.
Take Patanol exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Generally, the recommended use of Patanol is one drop in each affected eye twice daily at an interval of 6 or 8 hours.
In patient studies, when the use of Patanol was compared to a control of pure saline solution, there was very little difference in the overall occurrence of side effects. Therefore, side effects are rather uncommon and should not be anticipated. The most frequently reported side effects for Patanol were headache (7%) and burning and stinging (less than 5%). If you experience intense side effects that are bothersome, or may involve allergic reactions, tell your doctor as soon as possible.
