Prevacid should be used to treat frequent (two times per week of more) heartburn. Prevacid is a proton pump inhibitor, which means it stops the production of acid in the stomach. Prevacid does not mask the acid that's already there, so it does not work immediately. Some people may gain relief within 24 hours, but it may take 1-4 days for a full effect. If taken once a day as directed by your physician, Prevacid can work for a full 24 hours.
Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking before beginning Prevacid, especially Carafate and Sucralfate. Also tell your doctor if you have ever experienced heart or liver problems. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult with a healthcare professional before taking Prevacid. People who are allergic to lansoprazole (Prevacid's active ingredient) or experience the following should not use Prevacid, as these can be the sign of a serious condition: difficulty or pain swallowing food, vomiting with blood, and bloody or black stools. Speak with a doctor before beginning any new medication.
Take Prevacid delayed-release capsules as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist. Prevacid is typically taken with at least 8 ounces of water before eating in the morning. Prevacid is typically a 14-day course of treatment that can be repeated every four months, or as directed by a doctor. Do not stop taking Prevacid before the prescribed course of treatment has expired even if your condition improves.
The most common side effects of Prevacid are headaches, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. If you experience a rare allergic reaction to Prevacid (hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat, etc.), seek immediate medical attention.
