What Is Propecia & How Does It Work?
Propecia is the only daily, FDA-approved prescription medication that treats certain types of male pattern hair loss. Propecia stops hair loss in about 90 percent of men, but more importantly, about 2 out of 3 men who use Propecia experience the growth of new hair.
DHT is a substance that can shrink hair follicles until they no longer produce hair. Propecia is effective because it inhibits the formation of DHT in the scalp. It is unlikely that a man will grow back all of the hair he has lost, but results vary. Propecia is effective in treating male pattern hair loss and in helping to regrow hair on the scalp at the vertex (top) and anterior mid-scalp area (middle to front). Propecia is much less effective in providing results for receding hairlines at the temples.
Although it may take at least three months for men to see positive visual results with Propecia, the medication can be discontinued if it does not work within 12 months. Consult with your doctor at regular intervals to monitor your progress. Once Propecia is started, it will continue to produce positive results only if taken continuously. If Propecia is discontinued, patients will probably lose any hair that was regrown within 12 months.
Propecia is prescribed for men only. Women and children should notconsume Propecia.
Pregnant women, and women who believe they may be pregnant, must not handle crushed or broken Propecia tablets. The active ingredient may cause abnormalities with a male baby's sexual organs. Propecia tablets are coated, which prevents contact with the active ingredient during normal handling of undamaged pills. However, if women who are pregnant, or may be pregnant, handle crushed or broken Propecia, they should quickly speak with a physician.
Although you should take Propecia and all medications as instructed by your doctor, Propecia is generally taken as follows:
About 98 percent of men who take Propecia report no side effects. In certain cases, however, sexual side effects were reported by men who took part in clinical studies. These included difficulty in achieving an erection loss, loss of libido/less desire for sex, and a decrease in amount of semen. If use of Propecia was discontinued, these side effects went away.
