Tamiflu is the medication that is prescribed the most for the flu. This is because it is proven to shorten the duration of the symptoms associated with the flu virus by as much as one-third. Clinical trials indicted that adults who took Tamiflu within the first 48 hours of having flu symptoms recovered 30% faster than those who did not. Children who received Tamiflu recovered 26% faster from their symptoms when compared to children who did not.
Getting a flu shot is typically the best way to prevent the flu. However, these vaccines only protect patients against specific strains. Tamiflu, on the other hand, lessens the duration of the flu for nearly every strain a person could become infected with. Also, Tamiflu can be taken even if you have already received a flu vaccination.
Tamiflu (also referred to as oseltamivir phosphate, its main ingredient) inhibits neuraminidase, a protein within the cells of the flu virus that helps rupture the walls of cells, which causes the virus to infect other cells and duplicate itself in the body. When the neuraminidase protein is disabled, the flu virus cannot break cells walls, the spread of the virus is contained, and the virus eventually dies.
Although Tamiflu is effective for most adults, you should always speak with your doctor before beginning any new medication to make sure it is appropriate for you. For instance, your doctor needs to know if:
Important: Children must not take Tamiflu unless directed specifically by their doctor. Although rare, serious side effects such as seizures may occur with children who take Tamiflu.
All medications, including Tamiflu, should be taken only as directed by your physician. Adults take Tamiflu in pill form. Although Tamiflu may be taken on an empty stomach, it is recommended that it be taken after a meal. Tamiflu must be taken within 48 hours of contracting the flu virus in order to be most effective. It is not effective if taken 72 or more hours after flu symptoms are present. Tamiflu should not be taken unless flu symptoms are present. Doctors generally recommend that Tamiflu be taken twice daily for five days to treat the flu.
As with all prescription medications, there are certain side effects that may occur with Tamiflu. Be sure to share with your physician any and all medications and supplements that you are currently taking, even if they are over-the-counter. This will prevent any drug interactions. Also make your doctor aware of any allergies you may have.
The most common side effects of Tamiflu include nausea and vomiting. In rare cases, there have been reports of delirium and/or seizures with children who take Tamiflu. Only your doctor should prescribe Tamiflu for your children, and all children should be monitored closely when taking Tamiflu.
In very rare cases, serious allergic reactions and skin reactions have occurred, and these could potentially be life-threatening. If you encounter any of these rare, yet serious side effects, seek medical attention immediately and stop using Tamiflu.
