Viagra - The Most-Prescribed ED Treatment

What is Viagra & How Does It Work?

Viagra was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration in March of 1998 as the first prescription medication to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). The active ingredient in Viagra is sildenafil citrate, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitor that allows the muscles of the penis to relax, which increases blood flow. While searching for a treatment for angina, employees at Pfizer determined Viagra could effectively treat ED.

Viagra suppresses the body's reaction to PDE-5. Because of this, a chemical called nitric oxide is more easily able to relax the smooth muscles in the penis when sexual stimulation occurs. Therefore, more blood reaches the vessels in the penis, causing a firmer and more sustainable erection. Research has shown that about 4 in 5 men who suffer from ED experience improved erections and sex with Viagra.

How to Take Viagra & Doses

Viagra is produced in tablet form and is ingested orally in either 25mg (unavailable on this website), 50mg or 100mg doses. Many patients choose to split their 100mg pills into halves or thirds, etc. Although Viagra can be taken with a meal, it is most effective when ingested on an empty stomach. Fatty foods, such as a burger and fries, can slow the absorption of sildenafil into the bloodstream, but Viagra is generally effective within about 30 minutes for all men. It will remain effective for about four hours.

Viagra, as well as its FDA-approved ED counterparts Cialis and Levitra, should not to be taken more than once every 24 hours. Viagra should not be used unnecessarily in order to prevent patients from becoming tolerant of its effects.

Viagra Precautions

There are several precautions that all patients should consider before taking Viagra:

  • First, always speak with your local doctor before beginning any new medication and always receive regular check-ups and exams, at least once every year.
  • Do not take Viagra with nitrates, a common treatment for chest pain. If you take Viagra with any medication that contains nitrates, a sudden, unsafe drop in blood pressure may occur.
  • Certain patients who take medicines called alpha blockers – usually for prostate problems or high blood pressure - should start on a lower dose of Viagra. Consult with your local doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you take anti-depressant drugs or medications used to treat anxiety or other emotional problems or issues. Your doctor needs to know any and all medications you may be taking, even herbal supplements, etc.
  • Your doctor should be made aware of any and all pre-existing conditions that affect physical activity, such as a heart problem. It must be determined that you are healthy enough to engage in sex before a prescription for Viagra may be written.
  • Do not provide your prescription Viagra to anyone else, including women or children. This could cause harmful effects.
  • Viagra Side Effects

The most common side effects of Viagra are headache, facial flushing and upset stomach. These symptoms are rarely severe and typically subside within a few hours. Uncommon side effects include bluish vision, blurred vision or sensitivity to light.

If you take a higher dose of Viagra (100mg), the side effects can be more pronounced. If you experience side effects that are uncomfortable, make you doctor aware of them. If you experience serious side effects when taking Viagra, discontinue use of the medication immediately and seek medical assistance if necessary. If you are unsure, call your doctor or emergency room.

If you experience rare side effects of chest pain, sudden changes in vision or hearing, or an erection that lasts for more than four hours (priapism), or that is painful, seek immediate medical attention. Although an April 2009 study ("Archives of Ophthalmology") concluded that Viagra and other ED medications have no negative effect on the retina or vision, patients with retina or eye problems should speak with their doctor before taking any medications for ED.
